The Australian Fairy Tale Society’s 2023 conference Cottage, Cauldron, Castle: Power and Place in Fairy Tales, is June 24-25 in Sydney. Applications to present are open til March 11, so submit your proposal for a talk, performance, panel discussion, display, workshop etc at australianfairytalesociety.org/2023/02/08/call-for-submissions-2023-AFTS-conference 💜🐸 xx

Posted @withrepost • @sereneconneeley One of my favourite things about being part of the Australian Fairy Tale Society is the wonderful, talented members and their gorgeous co-creations – which is one of the aims of the Society, to spark magical new projects and collaborations inspired by the stories we investigate. Author Sophie Masson and illustrator and artist Lorena Carrington created the gorgeous book French Fairy Tales, and this year they started Pardalote Press, a tiny press making small surprising things. It was a pleasure to help crowdfund their first two releases, the book Bird’s Eye View and the sweet Wayfarer card deck, which can inspire your own creations.

It’s only three weeks until Book Fair Australia, a new festival celebrating books of all genres as well as storytelling, art and diversity. There are workshops, panels, talks, readings, storytelling and more!

While D'Aulnoy was the one to coin the term 'fairy tales' in 1690 and Straparola included 13 fairy tales in his book 'Pleasant Nights' in 1555, it was Giambattista Basile (pronounced Bah-seal-ay) who wrote the first book of fairy tales, The Tale of Tales, or The Pentamerone, published posthumously in 1634-6. This book contains some of the earliest printed versions of well-loved stories such as Puss In Boots and Sleeping Beauty...but our November fairy tale is a little more obscure - Verde Prato (Green Meadow), or The Three Sisters.

At #afts2022brisbane Jo Henwood inspired in 'A history of Australian fairy tales' and our keynote panel: "Australian Fairy Tales: Flesh or Fossil?" Stay tuned for 'Salonline' - a web series about the 17th Century French Fairy Tale Salons, with Jo, Eliane Morel and Alyssa Curtayne.
