THE FUTURE
Raindrops underscore the
dark blueberry ash berries
poised on our backyard tree,
highlighting them in silver arcs.
The air holds its breath, waiting.
It’s like a still life painting, when we
don’t know quite enough
to interpret the symbols fully.
Meanwhile, a capricious cyclone dawdles in deciding
when and where to hit our coastal peoples.
Those living rough in tents have been persuaded
into shelters, pillowcases made into sandbags
and the kids are joyous at the prospect
of another day off school.
A lucky country, this, we say.
At least we’re not in Gaza.
Yes. The future is always
an unknown country.
