About the AFTS

Are you interested in fairy tales from all over the world?

Would you like to explore them from an Australian perspective?

The AFTS is a national society with branches in most states and territories, that aims “To explore fairy tales through an Australian perspective and to stimulate the creation of Australian interpretations: academic, creative, and performative.”

The society is an incredible mix of academics, artists, storytellers, musicians, writers and fairy tale lovers; a full spectrum of knowledge and enthusiasm that makes for a magical mix.

We have an annual conference, and previous themes have included The Fairy Tale in Australia, Transformations, Into the Bush, So Many Mattresses, Gardens of Good and Evil, Magic Mirrors: The Seen and the Unseen, and Enchanting…music, magic, spells.

Local Rings gather five times a year, and our Magic Mirrors gather by Zoom almost every month, to explore specific fairy tales like a book club for fairy tales.

We have an Ezine and an original Anthology, South of the Sun: Australian Fairy Tales for the 21st Century, an enchanting illustrated book of fairy tales – but not the kind you read to children at bedtime.  They are strictly for grown-ups. Often dark, the stories visit places where things don’t end happily ever after, where a single decision can haunt you forever.  But there are also tales to make you laugh out loud, stories of sweet revenge and scenes of sheer delight in the work of magic and the fey.

To join the conversation or just keep up to date with what the society is doing, you can follow our News via email as listed in the sidebar, like our Facebook page, or follow us on Twitter.

If you wish to support the society and enjoy our member benefits, we would be delighted if you became a member.

To become a member of the AFTS costs $25 a year and here is the membership link. A true bargain, considering the incredible online magazine, opportunities for meet-ups and gatherings, the yearly conference, and the experience of being welcomed into a group of wonderful new friends.

The Australian Fairy Tale Society acknowledges Traditional Owners and Elders past and present across Australia.
